When
we 'wrapped' THE NIGHT OF THE COSSACKS in January of 1969, it didn't
end my relationship with Bob. I would continue to see him almost
on a daily basis. Sometimes we would meet Huff, Red, Whitey and
some of the other guys for a game of pool, lunch, or just to hang
out. It was nice having nothing to do, but Bob preferred to keep
busy.
In
the summer of 1972, I went with Bob to Vienna, Austria to film a
series. When we returned home, Bob and I went our separate ways.
I opened a pizza store and Bob continued with his successful career
in television. During this same period, Bob build a beautiful mountain
retreat in Bear Valley which he now calls home.
Bob
sold Frankie Crawford's contract to Jackie McCoy, a very good trainer
and manager who has managed/trained many successful fighters. He
managed to get Frankie two shots at the featherweight title. Losing
the first fight on a very unpopular decision, Frankie told me his
heart was not in the second fight, which he lost by another decision.
Near
the end of Frankie's career, he was living in Las Vegas and training
for a fight when he had an argument with his trainer (not Jackie
McCoy) and the man shot Frankie. The bullet severed Frankie's spine,
paralyzing him. Unable to live with the pain, Frankie shot and killed
himself on January 13, 1983.
Ross,
as has so many others who did the show, gone on to bigger and better
things with God in Heaven. This, I sincerely choose to believe.
Whitey,
who is now the same age as when he was doing the show, is bathing
in the luxury of semi-retirement with his wonderful wife Dotty.
Red
and his family moved back to his home in Tennessee where Red opened
an acting studio.
Bobby
Herron, Tommy Huff and most of the other stuntmen are still 'falling
down' for the big bucks.
As
for myself, what I've done, you probably wouldn't believe. The things
I've been accused of, never happened. But, that's another story.
