"The
Night Of The Underground Terror" turned out to be another of our
fun shows. Nehemiah Persoff, who guest starred in an episode titled,
"The Night Of The Deadly Blossom" was back and everybody was in
a fun mood; much to the dismay of our lovable sound mixer, Andy
Gilmore. Mr. Persoff with his gang of hoodlums were a jury of five
seated beneath the roof of an outdoor viewing booth a few feet above
the ground.
The
men consisted of Whitey Hughes, Red West, Terry Leonard, Jerry Laveroni,
and myself. We were on the outdoor set of a deserted Civil War prison
camp looking down at Agent James West, stripped to the waist, with
his arms stretched out and his wrists bound in stocks. Next to him,
stripped and bound in the same fashion, is Colonel Mosely (played
by Jeff Corey), former Commandant of the prison where Colonel Mosely
has hidden one million dollars in gold.
The
camera is viewing the booth from a distance as well as close-up,
so a microphone had to be hidden on the floor near our feet. This
mike would cover our dialogue. Someone had picked up a large bag
of shelled peanuts and as the crew prepared for the shot, we ate
the peanuts and tossed the shells on the wooden floor at our feet.
Unbeknownst to us, Andy Gilmore, who is able to hear a pin drop
through the mike on the floor, is listening to our feet scramble
about crushing the empty shells. The noise was driving him nuts
(no pun intended). He then made the terrible mistake of informing
us of his dilemma by asking, "What the hell are you guys doing over
there?" After explaining the noise we now realized we were making,
we really drove him nuts; but, just until the director was ready
to "roll the camera."
Artemus
enters the scene doing a beautiful job as a naive prospector with
a divining rod capable of finding gold. Gold! Just like that which
we are about to torture Colonel Mosely to get. In his comical process
of relieving us of our guns and getting us to stand aside, Artemus
frees his comrade and a fight follows.
Though
some may have gone unnoticed, several unexpected surprises happened
during this fight but as usual, Bob quickly improvised and managed
to finish without a camera cut. Because of this ability to improvise,
Bob must have saved the studio untold thousands of dollars.
Fortunately,
Bob wears clean underwear; during the fight sequence, Bob tore his
pants up the back. As the roof of the viewing booth came down on
us, Bob maneuvered me around the fallen roof and knocked me over
the railing to the ground, where I landed on my head. In the confusion,
Terry picked up a real chair in place of a breakaway and hit Bob
over the head with it. Aside from the unexpected problems, everything
turned out just fine and we finished the fight in one take.

Terry
worked several shows with The Guys and has since worked his way
to one of the top stuntmen in the business. It was Terry who was
responsible for the fantastic stunts you enjoyed watching Harrison
Ford perform in "RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK."
