Cangey: When this book was finished, I sent a copy to Robert Conrad.
I could not possibly put the book on the market without the approval
of Bob and/or "The Guys" I had written about. A few days later, I
held my breath and called Bob. I wanted to ask him to write the "FOREWORD."
I was ecstatic when, without hesitation, Bob agreed. Following is
his response:
If
I were to define the success of THE WILD WILD WEST, I would agree
with Webster's dictionary. "Esprit de Corps. The common spirit existing
in the members of a group and inspiring enthusiasm, devotion and
strong regard for the honor of the group." Thirty-one years later,
I look to the ingenuity of our writers; to Henry Sharp, who dictated
the concept to the writers and Bruce Lansbury, who stayed true to
the creative concept of Mike Garrison, Hunt Stromberg, and of course,
Len Katzman who was on the front lines. The western that wasn't.
The show that wasn't canceled for ratings, but for politics. The
show that is still with us today, not because of those of us who
made the show, but because of you who watched it. You now, when
reading this book, have a rare opportunity to live out our lives
with us on a day to day basis... sharing with Dick Cangey, "one
of the guys," his perspective of life inside THE WILD WILD WEST.
