Michael
Dunn's real name is Gary Neil Miller and born in Shattuck, Oklahoma.
At full growth, he was 3' 6" tall and weighed in at 79 pounds.
In 1964, he was quoted in Life magazine. It read:
Once
in a while Michael Dunn unexpectedly catches sight of himself in
a mirror. "There I am," he says, "a dwarf. It shocks
me. I can't believe it's me. I don't feel like a dwarf inside."
Born
of normal-sized parents, dwarfed by a bone disease called achondroplasia,
Michael Dunn legs were very weak and he wore steel ankle braces.
He also had difficulty straightening his elbows. Despite his handicapped
condition, he managed to overwhelm those around him with extraordinary
talent. He had a genius IQ of 178 and earned most of his tuition
for the University of Florida by belting out songs in a local saloon.
Singing
the occasional song on the Wild Wild West was his idea. Dunn said,
"Singing gives Miguelito an added dimension. He may be nuts
but that doesn't stop him from singing beautifully." Prior
to the Wild Wild West, Dunn was in a play with Phoebe Dorin (sang
with Dunn in several episodes of the WWW), and also had a night
club singing act with her.
Dunn
is no stranger to critical acclaim. He had an Academy Award nomination
for Best Supporting Actor in SHIP OF FOOLS. He won the New York
Critics' Circle Award for Best Supporting Actor in the Broadway
play BALLAD OF THE SAD CAFE and also was nominated for a Tony in
the same play. He was also granted Emmy Award nominations for THE
WILD WILD WEST and BONANZA.
In
New York in 1967, he married an above average-sized (5' 5")
woman named Joy Talbot. He died at the age of 39 on August 29th,
1973. He was in London on location for the film THE ABDICATION when
he died suddenly at his hotel.
